Qinghai- Tibet Railway Referred to as the Qinghai-Tibet Line, it is a Class I national railway connecting Xining City in Qinghai Province to Lhasa City in Tibet. It is one of China's four major projects in the new century . It is the first railway leading to the hinterland of Tibet and the world's highest altitude and longest plateau railway. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway was built in two phases. The first phase of the project started in 1958 and opened to traffic in May 1984. The second phase of the project started on June 29 , 2001 and opened to traffic on July 1, 2006. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway runs from Xining Station to Lhasa Station. The total length of the line is 1,956 kilometers, and the running time is about 20 hours .
